How to get rid of bubbles from laminate surfaces?
Laminating is a tricky business and requires tons of patience. Laminated surfaces embellish interiors and enhance the beauty of any space. Bubbles on these surfaces hamper the beauty of the laminate and should be removed immediately. Before skipping to the remedy to the creation of bubbles one must be aware of the causes that created them in the first place.
- Insufficient force – The lack of force from rollers caused the trapping of bubbles between the film and image.
- Fast movement of rollers – Formation of bubbles occurs even when the process of placing material in the rollers is too fast.
- Wet laminates – Hot spots which are created due to rollers working on ink that is not entirely dry leads to bubble formation. Ensure that the ink on the laminate is completely dry after printing.
- Moisture – Wood reacts with moisture. It disrupts the humidity balance by introducing water into the laminate.
Procedure to get rid of the bubbles from laminate surfaces without using adhesive
Material required – Hot air gun, small and thin nails, damp cloth.
Process
- In case of a small bubble, heat the area of the bubble properly for a minute with a hot air gun. Once heated, press the area with a damp cloth with both hands in a semi-circular motion.
- In the case of a big bubble, take a small, thin nail and pierce it in the bubble to make a hole without damaging the laminate. Now, take the hot air gun and heat the area of the bubble for a minute. Once heated, press the area with a damp cloth using both hands in a semi-circular motion.
If the above techniques are not effective to eliminate the bubble from the laminate then one should shift to the use of adhesives to get rid of them.
Material required – Adhesive, water, hot air gun, small and thin nails, damn cloth, syringe.
Process
- Make two holes, on the top and the bottom of the bubble using the small, thin nails. Make a solution of the adhesive by mixing some water with it (as instructed). Fill the adhesive in the syringe. With the help of the syringe fill the adhesive in the bubble from the hole made on the top of the bubble. Press on the bubble with a damp cloth using both hands so that the excess adhesive pours out of the bubble from the bottom. After this process, use the hot air gun to heat the area of the bubble. Again repeat the process of pressing on the bubble with a damp cloth with both hands in a semi-circular motion.
Important Points to keep in mind
- Although there are ways to eliminate bubbles one should take all the required measures to prevent them from being created.
- Keep the laminate surface free of dust and water.
- Prevent moisture from being created.
- Clean it with a dry cloth regularly.
- During the first installation never mix water with the adhesive.
- Give ample amount of time for the adhesive to dry completely.
- Maintain patience while working to get rid of the bubbles.
- While heating the area, take a larger area than the area of the bubbles. This allows the laminate to slip to the edge and adjust its dimensions.
- Follow proper maintenance as instructed during the time of installation.
